I think I was lucky enough to have my mentor be my supervisor; this makes goal setting and personal development very easy, as they know my workload and can work with me to set achievable goals. That's not to say anyone can be your mentor. I think connecting with someone you are comfortable with and has the experience and knowledge to be your mentor is vital because you'll be comfortable asking for advice and/or opening up and being honest about your goals and expectations. So I'd recommend getting to know the people you work with and, from there, ask the person you feel will be the best mentor for you.

I met my mentor on the IGO Mentoring Program. I was paired with someone outside my discipline and found real value in the cross-functional approach. The Program is an important learning and development program offered each year to our people. I still meet regularly with my Mentor even after the end of the Mentoring Program.
